Mediterranean Cuisine at Lord Byron in Ios, Greece

The Mediterranean diet has been touted as being the “healthiest diet ever” by a variety of sources, and there is no doubt that this region’s cuisine ticks all those boxes. It also has a reputation for being extremely fresh, locally sourced, and absolutely delicious. Greece was no exception.

One restaurant on the island of Ios stuck out in particular, not only owing to their cooking, but also due to the story behind it. Lord Byron could be considered an unusual name for a restaurant on a Greek island, far away from Britain and in an environment in no way resembling their often less than sunny climate. It makes sense, however, in that the owner is in fact British. Molly married a Greek man by the name of Vasilis, and together they created this restaurant in the Chora (the main village) of the Ios. This couple traveled the world on a sort of culinary adventure, bringing back bits and pieces to include in their own venture. There is no better place to see evidence of this than in the eclectic decor, which is a collection of items and tastes acquired during these travels.

If the vibrant colors aren’t enough to entice you into this establishment, rest assured the quality of the menu speaks for itself. There are a variety of dishes offered, some Mediterranean Greek and some more traditional British fare. There will be something to satisfy most every tastebud, to be sure. Not to mention they have one of the best stocked bars and most extensive drink list of any of the other restaurants our group visited. Who would have thought you’d be able to sip on a quality, traditionally made mint julep in the Greek islands!
