Living Vicariously in Koh Samui

I’ve been living vicariously these days.

Since my New Zealand adventure came to a close and I’ve been (gasp!) confined to my home country, I’ve been traveling the most economical way possible… in my own imagination.

I’ve been back to Europe, back to Australia, the Caribbean, all over Southeast Asia… through blog posts, Pinterest pins and Instagram. Hiking mountains in Nepal and exploring temples in Cambodia. If only…

There is one place that holds a prominent place in my travel fantasies: Thailand.

In particular, the island of Koh Samui.

Koh Samui

I was in Koh Samui only briefly in the summer of 2012. A couple nights was just enough to wet the appetite for this gorgeously exotic island. Thailand has a long-standing reputation as a backpacker’s paradise. But don’t let that fool you. There’s a luxury side to Koh Samui that would satisfy even the most discerning jet setter.

We’ve already established that my own backpacking days are a thing of the past. Hotels are fabulous, but not always the most practical for groups. Now private rentals… that’s a different story.

Koh Samui

The luxury villa rental market is growing hotter by the minute. Travelers looking for a bespoke holiday experience are trading in hotel suites in favor of the intimacy of their own private house or apartment unit. And why wouldn’t you?

Let’s say you’re going to Koh Samui. Maybe it’s a family reunion of sorts, or a retreat with girlfriends. Or just you and one other person.  And you want to stay at least two weeks, because once you step foot on this island you’re not going to want to leave much sooner (trust me). How fabulous would it be to rent an exclusive property for the duration of your trip?

And these days there are plenty of options.

The images above are from the new Oceana Residence on the north east side of Koh Samui. It’s the latest project by Luxury Living, a hugely successful developer of luxury properties on the island. If there’s two words to describe this property, it’s these: absolutely stunning.

Located just a stone’s throw away from the beach, the one and two-bedroom condos up the ante in terms of island glamor. And given my appreciation for good design, every detail I’ve seen on this place screams yes… in the most sophisticated manner possible, of course.

Koh Samui

Oh Koh Samui… you cheeky paradise you. Sneaking up on us with your growing reputation as a luxury destination.

But you will never be the Cabo San Lucas of the Gulf of Thailand. Or the Monte Carlo-esque playground in the Pacific for the rich and famous. And for that we thank you.

You will always keep your charm. The promise of white sand beaches, turquoise waters and exotic experiences. And the taste of authentic curry, enjoyed beachside and washed down with a cold Singha beer.

Maybe we’ll stay two weeks in one of your high-class villas.

Or maybe we’ll stay forever.

  • Would so much rather be there than in freezing NYC right now!

    • This is what winter does to you!! We don’t get too itchy to escape cold here in Florida – we’re more perma-vacationers lol. But I am considering moving to Chicago sometime next year, and winter will take on a whole new meaning. I’ll be dreaming of warm island escapes daily! 🙂

  • I’m in love with the idea of that open living room – where you can literally fall out of the couch and into the pool! Looks like something out of a Bond film!

    • Isn’t it gorgeous?!? And it DOES look like something out of a Bond film! Perfectly suited for the perfectly suave members of society. And maybe a few of us other less glamorous visitors! 😉

      • I’m okay with being an extra on the set 🙂
